Last Thursday I had the pleasure of attending the private view for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize at The Photographers Gallery. The Photographers Gallery is a brilliant establishment and they never fail to make teachers feel welcome. It's worth signing up for their mailing list as there's always plenty of opportunities to attend private views like these (which include a free beer/wine/soft drink or two, lovely!) talks and to see the latest resources they've uploaded. The private views are always bustling and it's a great chance not only to see the wonderful work on display but to do a bit of networking, on Thursday I was whisked over upon entering to meet a lovely lady whose involved with CLICK the Youth Forum. They offer opportunities for 14-19 to get involved leading talks, events and projects with the aim of raising awareness of photography - it sounds brilliant and I'm planning to get some of my BTEC National Extended diploma students signed up as part of their photography unit!
The Deutsche Börse Photography Prize made for interesting viewing. This years selected artists are Pieter Hugo, Rinko Kawauchi, John Stezaker and Christopher Williams. I was familiar with John Stezaker's work prior to the show and it was wonderful to see his work in the flesh. His work was hung alongside Christopher Williams although I felt the combination of the two in one room a little odd, I also felt perhaps the concepts of Williams work went somewhat over my head! However Pieter Hugo and Rinko Kawauchi shared the top gallery and it created quite the atmosphere. As you walk into the space you're drawn to look at an installation of televisions projecting filmed still portraits (the best way I can describe it) and large prints from Hugo's Permanent Error collection. Beautifully dotted across the remaining walls, in a minimalist gallery hang sort of style, are the unusual imagery captured by Rinko Kawauchi - I adored how this was hung. Overall a wonderful show with an interesting selection of work - it'll be interesting to see whose awarded the prize!
